WinXP SP2 limits max. number of TCP connections/second

Apparently, to reduce the spread of worms like Sasser, Windows XP Service Pack 2 will limit the maximum number of TCP connections your computer can have at one time. I can see what they are thinking, but I wont mind unless some of my applications (like my multi-threaded port scanner) wont work correctly with this new setting. I guess I'll hold off on increasing the max. untill an application generates an error because of it.

Here is a registry edit you can do to increase the max:

TcpNumConnections
Key: Tcpip\Parameters
Value Type: REG_DWORD - Number
Valid Range: 0 - 0xfffffe
Default: 0xfffffe
Description: This parameter limits the maximum number of connections that TCP can have open at the same time.

that so called PATCH totally killed my network connection by messing up a regstry setting, then getting the tcpNumConnection value wrong, giving XP over a billion connections. DON'T USE THE PATCH, USE THE REGSITRY TWEAK ABOVE unless you want a nightmare....repair network adapter didn't work, uninstalling/reinstalling it didn't work either!!

I've dicovered the problem!! Sp2 has some type of protection against files from other computers apparently. You must right click all the tcpip.sys files-->choose properties-->click the unblock button at the bottom of the properties window. Then reboot and it works...the dialog next to the button says "This file came from another computer and is blocked"

I deleted the Feedback with the link to the "PATCH" that TekWiz says totally killed his network connection. Thanks for the feedback. Smile

Youve just smeared someone who was trying to help. Not all work arounds work on all machines/code dude. Tech Wiz my arse...
